Pat Campbell, PhD, runs the Implant Retrieval Laboratory at Orthopaedic Hospital, Los Angeles. While having performed her PhD in the area of polyethylene wear and aseptic loosening, her focus is now on the clinical performance and causes for failure of metal-on-metal hip joints. This involves coordinated tribological, clinical and histopathological analyses and the implants are submitted from the USA and around the world. Her work has been recognized with several scholarly awards including the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society and she is one of only 4 women to be invited to join the Hip Society of the AAOS.
